Description

Grice's Granary Film Studios is a grain warehouse that has been converted into film studios and a picture research library. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with hopper heads dated 1796 and 1800 that have since been removed. An extension of four bays was added to the south around 1880, and there was a 20th-century rebuild of the south-west corner. The building is constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings on the late 19th-century extension and features a hipped slate roof behind a parapet. The corner rebuild is made of red brick with a parapet and cornice.

The studio runs between Rotherhithe Street and St Marychurch Street and is connected to Grice's Wharf at 119 Rotherhithe Street by a later gangway. The elevation facing Rotherhithe Street has three storeys and seven bays, with a curved return to the west. There are three hatch ranks that have been adapted as windows above, along with openings on the ground floor. The windows are small, two-light designs with cambered arches. The St Marychurch Street elevation has ten bays with irregular camber-headed openings and a hoist to the second-floor hatch in the third bay from the left.

Inside, the original structure is divided by brick party walls into three units. It features timber floors and posts, reinforced on the ground floor with timber hanging knees, and a queen post roof. For further information, see the note to Grice's Wharf.
