Description

Vogans Mill is a warehouse, later converted into residential use, dating from approximately 1880 to 1890. It was rebuilt behind the original street frontage in the 1980s. The building is constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings, and it rises six storeys, with five bays facing the street and a parapet above a stepped brick cornice. A hatch rank, originally on the left-hand side above the ground floor, has now been adapted as balconies. The ground floor features a tetrastyle portico/waggon entrance, originally open but now glazed, with cast-iron columns and pilaster trim to flanking brick piers. Segmental, gauged-brick arches frame the windows on the upper floors. The interior retains cast-iron columns in the front two bays of the ground floor, while the rest of the interior was completely rebuilt behind, incorporating a 20th-century dockside elevation. Vogans Mill was originally a split pea mill and is part of a larger complex. It forms a group with the other warehouses in Mill Street.
