Description
The former St Luke's Church of England Primary School, now a community centre, was built between 1845 and 1847. It features yellow brick with stone dressings and steeply pitched slate roofs, with the roof of the Junior School being a newer replacement for the original red tiles. The building has a T-plan layout.
The Infant School faces Jowett Street and is a single storey with an attic, comprising five bays. It has a projecting end arm under a gable, with a gabled porch that includes a Tudor-arched doorway. Stepped buttresses separate the mullioned and transomed windows, and there is a high quatrefoil window above three long windows, which may have been replaced later. Inside, there is a hall with a brace and collar-beam roof.
The Junior School, located on Sumner Road, is two storeys with an attic and has seven main bays. It features six gables with tile hanging and timber bargeboards, two of which project with first-floor oriels. The doors have alternating block surrounds, with three mullioned lights above, and there are two- and four-light windows with stone mullions, some of which include transoms. The gable end facing Jowett Street has paired and tripled windows with cusped, ogee heads.
To the right, there is a recessed two-storey extension with four bays. The ground floor is supported by cast-iron columns and features three Tudor arches, which are now blocked up, with stone keys and imposts. Above, there is a cusped, ogee-headed three-light window flanked by similar one-light windows, and a matching three-light window to the left. All windows have alternating stone block surrounds.
The interior is reputed to contain a stepped classroom resembling a tiny lecture theatre, which is a very rare survival.
