Description
This is a canopied drinking fountain, built in 1902, located approximately 45 meters south-southeast of the Church of St Mary Magdalene. It was given by Colonel S.B. Bevington, the first Mayor of Bermondsey, in memory of his father. The fountain is designed in a robust Gothic Revival style and is made of limestone and pink and grey granite. It features a gabled cruciform canopy supported by squat pink granite colonnettes. The structure includes a grey granite plinth and water bowl, with a limestone middle section and canopy. It stands at the entrance of the churchyard from the corner of Abbey Street and Tower Bridge Road. This fountain, along with the nearby Dedication Stele, serves as a notable reminder of the churchyard's transformation into a public park under vestry and later municipal management.
