Description

This building, at 187 and 189 Bermondsey Street, is a hostel, now converted into studios with flats above. It was constructed between 1907 and 1908, and is likely designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield for the Time and Talents Association. The building is constructed of English bond purple brick with red brick and stone dressings, and has a gabled Welsh slate roof with dormers hidden behind a stone-coped parapet. It is built in an Arts and Crafts style, with a double-depth plan.

The exterior is three storeys high, with a basement and attic. The ground floor is recessed and roughcast, articulated by banded piers of dark brick and Portland stone with stylised Ionic capitals. A fielded panel door with oval overlights is on the right, and a similar six-panelled door is to the right of it. The left bay has sash windows with glazing bars set in moulded wood architraves with roundels in the corners, and a basement window below. A carved stone frieze above reads "TIME AND TALENTS SETTLEMENT". The first and second floors are articulated by raised red brick quoins and central pilasters. Gauged, red brick flat arches and red brick dressings frame the horned 12-pane sashes, which are set in moulded wood architraves with roundels. Paired slit lights are at the sides, now filled in. The right side features a steeply pitched crow-stepped gable concealing attic windows and brick end stacks.

The interior is believed to retain some original features, including a grand chimneypiece on the first floor.

The Time and Talents Association, established in 1895, was an Anglican organisation that assisted young working women, playing a significant role in the settlement movement from the 1880s to 1914.
