Description

South London College, originally St Olave's Grammar School, is a red brick building with white stone dressings and a slate roof, constructed in 1893 by EW Mountford. The symmetrical main section, housing the hall, is flanked by projecting wings, with a large extension to the left.

The central section is three stories tall with an attic, featuring five bays. Windows have stone shouldered architraves, aprons, and pulvinated friezes with keystones, alternating with attached Ionic columns which support a balustraded parapet over an entablature that projects around the wings. A break-front segmental pediment, featuring carved figures of pupils learning in the tympanum, sits centrally above a stone-banded section. Round-arched dormers are set within the steep pitched roof, which rises to a lantern tower with an Ionic order and cupola. The projecting side sections have three stories, a clerestory, and shaped gable ends; each features three windows with segmental pediments on the second floor depicting figures representing various professions. Windows are sash windows with glazing bars, with the ground floor windows being segmental-headed and featuring keystones. An Ionic quadrant entrance porch is located in the angle, mirroring the cornice and window treatment of the wings. An extension to the left has three stories and attic dormers behind a parapet, with a polygonal stair-turret projecting centrally and featuring large round-headed openings with keystones and quarter columns on the ground floor, segmental-headed windows on the first floor, and a band of three- and four-light windows on the second floor. Stone-banded chimney stacks are present, one of which extends as a projecting bay on the side of the left wing. The interior has not been inspected.
