Description
The statue, located on an island site in front of South London College, was created in 1910 by the sculptor Sydney March. It features a bronze figure dressed in mayoral robes, standing on a tall stone plinth. The plinth is inscribed with the name Samuel Bourne Bevington, along with his dates of birth and death (1832-1907), and details of his military service as Colonel Commanding of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion of The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment from 1884 to 1889. It also notes that he was the first Mayor of Bermondsey from 1900 to 1902, and the statue was erected by his fellow citizens. The statue is surrounded by decorated iron railings.
