Description

This late 18th-century watch house is located in St John's Churchyard, now a recreation ground, in Fair Street, Southwark. The front facade is stuccoed and one storey high, with four bays facing the street. It has a prominent arcade motif with four round-headed arches, three of which are blank, and one serving as a doorway. Rusticated Doric pilasters support a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The left return is splayed, with two bays featuring an open stone pediment and quoins. A later extension in brown brick with stone dressings is located to the rear, adjacent to the park. The rear elevation has three windows with architraves, pulvinated friezes, and cornices. Steps leading down to a basement level are situated on the right side. The interior has not been inspected.
