Description

This former magistrates' court and police station was built in 1906 by John Dixon Butler, in an Edwardian Baroque style. It is located on the north side of Tooley Street in Southwark, and is accompanied by original iron railings.

The building has a shallow U-shaped plan of eleven window bays. The ground floor and centre and attic sections are constructed from stone, with stone dressings, while the remaining areas are red brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The roof is parapeted.

The main entrance to the magistrates' court is in the central range, accessed by steps leading to a tetrastyle porch with Ionic columns, and a balustrade above. The ground floor openings have eared and shouldered architraves, with windows in the side wings also featuring an entablature. The plinth and sill band to the ground floor are rusticated, with further banded rustication extending to the first floor sill band. The west wing housed the police station, with a flat-arched entrance beneath a semicircular canopy. The facade is distinguished by giant Ionic columns flanking the court entrance, each with an entablature block supporting a broken segmental pediment. The tympanum of the central pediment bears the Royal Arms in low relief. First floor windows feature projecting cornices and sharply triangular pediments supported by brackets, while second floor windows have eared architraves and stone spandrels. Balustrades run along the parapet and returns. Original sash windows are present throughout. A two-storey segmental bay with pilasters is located at the north-east corner of the court, leading to a flat-arched entrance with a semicircular hood.

The interior of the building has not been inspected.

Original iron railings are present to the forecourt and basement area.
