Description
The Anchor Tap Public House is a public house built in the early to mid 19th century, with refurbishment taking place in the late 19th century. It is designed in the Italianate style, featuring a stuccoed exterior with incised lines to mimic masonry, a slate roof, and a stock brick chimneystack. The building has two storeys and presents three windows on the front elevation. It is adorned with a moulded cornice and pilasters that flank the windows. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with cornices above, and there is a curved window at the corner. On the ground floor, there is a wooden bar front with a moulded cornice and fascia, a series of pilasters, and original curved double doors at the corner. The side elevation facing Copper Row includes two 12-pane sashes and a central doorcase with a half-glazed door flanked by pilasters.
Inside, the original bar divisions are preserved. There is an early 19th-century winder staircase with stick balusters. The two front bars feature matchboard panelling, while the later 19th-century bar counter includes panelling and brackets, with the bar back showcasing a moulded cornice, pilasters, and mirrors. The two front bars also have late 19th-century fireplaces with tiled surrounds, and a back bar retains the original chimney breast. The first-floor function room is highlighted by a mid-19th-century marble fireplace. The building was originally constructed as the Tap to the Anchor Brewery.
