Description

Tower Bridge Bridgemaster's House, located on the west side of the Tower Bridge approach, is a detached building dating from 1906 and designed by Sydney Perks. The house features red brick construction with a Portland stone ground floor that has a flush face, frieze, cornice, blocking course, and banded quoins on the front elevation. The south side and rear are built of stock brick.

The building stands three stories tall, with a lower level beneath the bridge approach, and is composed of three bays that exhibit early 18th-century style detailing. The right-hand bay has a recessed door with a bolection architrave that sweeps up at the top. The central window on the first floor is adorned with a pedimented eared architrave and a Rococo cartouche keystone that rises from the sill of the window below. All other windows are fitted with gauged brick segmental arches and flush-framed sash windows that include glazing bars and brick aprons beneath the sills. The north return features a Venetian window on the first floor.

A wrought-iron gate on the right provides access to steps leading down to the lower level workshops associated with Tower Bridge, located in the yard beside and beneath the bridge approach. The interior has not been inspected.
