Description

Number 10 is an early 18th-century vicarage, later converted into a dwelling, located on Fair Street in Southwark. The building sustained war damage and was subsequently repaired. It is constructed of stock brick with red brick and stone dressings, and has a slate roof concealed behind a parapet. The structure comprises two storeys, an attic, and a semi-sunk basement, with three bays. Stone steps lead to the front door, accompanied by wrought-iron railings with a tapering stone architrave, scroll brackets, a pulvinated frieze, and a dentilled cornice, all within a projecting central bay. This central bay extends through to the attic level, featuring a single window and a shallow pedimented gable. The windows are recessed sash windows with glazing bars, set within gauged, red brick flat arches. Red brick bands delineate the ground and first floors above and below the windows. A stone cornice runs above the first floor in the projecting central bay. The rear elevation exhibits similar detailing and form to the front but appears largely rebuilt. Returns on the rear have lunettes within the gable on either side of the projecting stack, with three of the four lunettes now filled in. The interior is believed to contain a good staircase and other noteworthy features.
