Description
96 Bermondsey Wall East is a former office building dated 1822, originally constructed for a sewer pumping station that has since been demolished. The building is made of stock brick with stone dressings, featuring a shallow stone frieze, cornice, and blocking course.
This two-storey, wedge-shaped corner building has a three-bay front and brick quoin pilasters. The ground floor includes small segmental gauged-brick arched windows set in segmental-arched panels that extend down to a stone plinth. The first floor has flat gauged-brick arches above two windows, which are now fitted with 20th-century metal casements. These windows flank a Portland stone Doric plaque inscribed with "Sewers Surrey and Kent, Duffield Sluice, 1822." There is a painted stone plat band between the floors. To the left, a one-bay splayed return features similar details and a blocked doorway with a cornice supported by console brackets.
The building is an early example of sewerage architecture, predating the current system that began in 1858, and it was part of the first phase of dock expansion. The interior has not been inspected.
