Description

Corbetts Wharf is a warehouse, built around 1860 to 1870, and later converted into flats. It is located on Bermondsey Wall East in Southwark. The building is constructed of stock brick with a new roof extension. The street-facing front is five storeys high and six bays wide, with a plain brick parapet. The ground floor has been opened up to the street, exposing internal cast-iron columns that support the first floor. There are two hatch ranks, now adapted, and windows with segmental arches formed with gauged bricks above. The river front, of four storeys and seven bays, is more architecturally elaborate. The ground floor has segmental-headed windows with stone sills, set into shallow, segmental-arched recesses. Above these, similar segmental-headed windows are found, with those in the outer pairs of bays set within segmental-arched recesses that rise through three storeys. Similar recesses are found in the bays flanking the centre, rising only through the first and second floors. New balconies have been added to some of the windows. At the top is a full entablature with a stucco frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The building was formerly connected to a range on the south side of the street by a gantry. The interior has not been inspected.
