Description

This is a granary, later used as London Grist Mills, built in 1866. It is constructed of stock brick with a hipped slate roof, featuring skylights. Part of the roof is surmounted by a timber clerestory, possibly to accommodate a pneumatic grain intake, visible from the river behind a plain parapet with coping. The building has a substantial rectangular plan.

The exterior presents five storeys and five bays to the street, seven bays to the river (two of which are blind), and four bays to the east return. The street facade is slightly convex, likely following the alignment of earlier buildings on the site. Full-height hatch ranks can be found on the street, river and east elevations, with a hipped hood over the hoist on the river side. The windows are smallish 2-light wooden mullioned windows with gauged brick segmental arches on all floors. Circular tie-rod plates are visible on each elevation.

Inside, the construction is timber-framed, with spreader capped posts supporting the floors and open timber staircases. Remnants of wooden chutes reportedly remain in situ, running from the top floor to the first, terminating in a movable table system connected to a hand winch by the loading hatch. These chutes have a weighted box breaking system.

The building was later known as the London Grist Mills from 1891 until 1940. It occupies a prominent riverside site with an exposed east return elevation. At the time of the survey, many windows were broken or boarded up.
