Description

This is a former corn mill and warehouse, now converted into residential use. It was originally built in 1882, but rebuilt between 1894 and 1898 after a fire, and then restored and converted again in 1981-3. The building is constructed of stock brick with yellow brick dressings, and features a slightly projecting brick parapet with stone coping, with more recent roof extensions to the rear.

The building is part of a complex of structures surrounding a courtyard on the east side of St Saviour’s Dock. The main elevation, facing the dock, is divided into three sections, each with a rhythm of full-height segmental-arched recesses. These recesses contain hatch ranks (platforms for loading and unloading) with added balconies, or segmental-arched windows, single in the central bay and paired in the outer bays. The segmental arches are built with gauged yellow brick. Two large 20th-century lattice cranes are mounted between the 2nd and 5th floors. The corner facing the river has three bays with similar detailing, including segmental-headed windows in recessed arches. The parapet above the central bay is raised with a corniced panel. The courtyard elevation has comparable detailing.

Inside, the building’s internal structure is supported by cruciform cast-iron columns. It has strong group value alongside the other buildings of New Concordia Wharf and with the warehouses along St Saviour's Dock.
