Description

A terrace of five houses located in West Square, dating from around 1800. The houses are constructed of yellow brick with stucco dressings, featuring a dentil cornice and parapet; number 20 has a stucco modillion cornice instead. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and generally has two bays, although number 20 has three. The doorways are round-headed, set in round-arched recesses with stucco keys and impost blocks that extend to the break-front cornices. They have decorative fanlights and original doors. Number 21 has slender attached, reeded Doric columns to the door jambs. Number 22 has fluted jambs; number 23 has reeded half-columns and a reeded cornice head. Number 24 has a stuccoed ground floor and its entrance is on the return, featuring a console bracketed dentil cornice, a recessed round-arched door with moulded spandrels and a cornice head, and a decorative fanlight; the windows have moulded architraves. All other windows have flat, gauged-brick arches and contain 4-, 6- and 12-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected. The terrace is accompanied by cast-iron area railings. West Square’s buildings are considered as a group.
