Description

The lock, located on Rotherhithe Street in Southwark, dates to around 1860 and was designed by the engineer Jennings. It features brickwork lined with granite kerbs, and incorporates cast-iron bollards and capstans. The lock originally had double iron-clad gates powered by hydraulics. The lock sides have been restored and the lock filled up to the gates. The structure possesses industrial archaeological interest and represents a good example of lock design during the second period of dock expansion. It is situated in a group that includes the Rotherhithe Tunnel air shaft.
