Description
No. 135 Rotherhithe Street is a mid-19th century barge building and repair works, which has been partly rebuilt. The structure is made of stock brick and features a pitched slate roof with a range of clerestory lights. It has gabled ends to the north and south, with the street side being coped and having kneelers, while the river side is plain. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The street elevation includes three tall segmental-arched openings, with a hatch (now adapted) above the central works entrance. There is a brick string course between the floors. The river elevation has an altered ground floor and openings, along with a small hoist hatch in the gable. All windows are topped with gauged brick segmental arches. The interior has not been inspected. The building is currently occupied by Charles Hay and Son, barge owners, builders, and repairers, who have been established since 1789. This site is a rare survival of its kind.
