Description
The Surrey Portal of the Rotherhithe Tunnel is an entrance to the tunnel, built between 1904 and 1908. The architect was Thomas Blashill, and the engineer was Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice, following the design principles established with the Blackwall Tunnel. The portal features a semicircular arch with a roll mould, and the spandrels and parapet are faced in polished pink granite. Below the parapet is a bull-nosed string, flanked by slightly battered dies that have curved pyramidal cappings. An inscription on the parapet states, "This tunnel, constructed by the London County Council was opened by HRH The Prince of Wales KC on the 21st of June 1908. Maurice Fitzmaurice CMG Engineer." This portal is similar in design to the portals of the Blackwall Tunnel. For the entrance on the Middlesex Shore, refer to Branch Road and Butcher Row in Shadwell, London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
