Description
No. 8A, Leathermarket Yard is a late 19th-century warehouse located in Southwark. Built in the Gothic Revival style, the principal elevation faces east and features four storeys with a five-window range. The design is symmetrical around a hoist bay that is set in a segmental-arched, full-height recess, with the hoist mounted on a Gothic colonnette. The ground floor has flat-arched openings, with the entrance to the right set in a segmental-arched recess. All segmental arches are banded with stone imposts. A brick dentil cornice and a broad stone sill band at the first floor give the ground floor the appearance of a "base" for the upper arched floors, which are articulated by piers with machicolated capitals. The windows are all two-light, with jambs treated as pilasters topped with bell capitals. The left corner is curved and rebated, leading to a return of three bays defined by giant pilasters, with another hoist crane positioned in the centre on a thin Gothic colonnette. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value with other 19th-century industrial buildings in Leathermarket Yard, Weston Street.
