Description
Two houses, dating from circa 1732, later restored and extended in the 20th century to form an office block. The building is constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings and a moulded cornice beneath a rebuilt brick parapet. The front elevation has three bays per house, and a sunk basement. The left-hand house (formerly number 148) features an 8-panel door within a timber doorcase with fluted, Corinthian pilasters, supporting an entablature with a dentil cornice and a broken scroll pediment. The right-hand house (formerly number 146) originally had a 19th-century shop front, now replaced by three ground-floor windows, and a bow-windowed extension to the rear. The sash windows have glazing bars and are set within flush boxed frames, with gauged, red brick segmental arches and red brick dressings. Red brick strings are present at the first and second floors. The interior of the left-hand section (formerly number 148) retains a largely complete and fine interior, including detailed panelling in several rooms, a staircase with iron twist balusters and moulded brackets, and a carved marble chimney piece, likely from the later 18th century, in the front ground-floor room depicting scenes of the leather trade. The interior of the right-hand house is largely replaced. Attached cast-iron area railings are also part of the property.
