Description

A set of 18th-century cast-iron railings, altered in the 20th century, runs east-west along the pavement edge in front of numbers 30, 32, and 34 Peckham Road. The railings are set in a low stone plinth with some concrete infill, and consist of square bars with alternating diamond-shaped and blunt spike-shaped tops. The standards (upright posts) have urn finials and dog-leg braces. A pair of large cast-iron arches, roughly the height of the top rail, are located at the centre, with decorative scrolled finials above. These appear to be the remains of gates to a former entrance, now incorporated into the railing run.

At the eastern and western ends are entrances with later cast-iron gates featuring matching finials. These are flanked by rusticated stone gate piers with stone caps, and cast-iron lamps set on decorative bases above.

The railings run along Peckham Road, between the pavement edge and the forecourt of numbers 30, 32, and 34 Peckham Road. Originally built as three substantial houses in 1790, numbers 30 and 32 were occupied as a school, named Alfred House, under the direction of Mr Wanostrocht. Later, it was sold to the Royal Navy and became the first Royal Naval School, providing education for the sons of naval and marine officers. After the school relocated in 1846, the building was renamed Camberwell House and converted to a private mental asylum by John Hayball Paul, which closed in 1955 and was subsequently used as offices by Southwark Borough Council.

The railings are designated at Grade II for their age and design as a surviving run of late Georgian railings and gate piers, and for their group value along with the listed numbers 30-34 Peckham Road and a listed lamp post within the grounds.
