Description
The war memorial at St Stephen’s Church in Lewisham is made of Portland stone and features a hooded Calvary cross with a carved figure of Christ. The cross has a tapered shaft with a collar and stands on an octagonal plinth that is inscribed with the years 1914 – 1918.
This plinth is placed on a three-stepped base. The top step bears the inscription: "FORGET NOT ON ENTERING/ THIS CHURCH THOSE WHO/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY." The middle step is inscribed: "REQUIESCANT IN PACE THANKS BE TO GOD WHO GIVETH THE VICTORY."
