Description
St Stephen's Church is a parish church built in 1856 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is designed in a cruciform shape with a south porch and showcases an Early English style featuring paired and grouped lancets. The exterior is constructed from snecked random rubble with freestone dressings, topped with a high-pitched tiled roof over the nave, aisles, and south transept. The north transept has a parapet where a tower was originally planned. The large west portal features paired doors set beneath cusped, pointed arches.
Inside, the church has a five-bay nave supported by a high arcade on round piers with foliated capitals. The chancel is three bays long and lined with marble. There is a rood loft, but no screen, and a fine embroidered banner is displayed. Some stained glass windows are by Clayton and Bell.
