Description

The Church of St Saviour and Sts John Baptist and Evangelist, a Roman Catholic church, was built in 1909 by John Kelly. It features a red brick construction in an Italian style, with a two-storey, one-window front. The building has overhanging mutule eaves that form an open pediment, with niches in the center and wide side pilasters holding figures of saints. Below the upper figure is a large round window, and three raised brick crosses are positioned beneath it. The projecting ground floor includes an entrance framed by Ionic columns and an open pediment, with a mosaic in the tympanum. Above the entrance, the inscription reads "JESUS GIVE THEM ETERNAL REST 1914 1918". Three stone figures representing the crucifixion are located above the pediment, and this Calvary was erected as a war memorial, unveiled in 1919. Two stone plaques on either side of the entrance list the names of the fallen men from the church. The flanking windows are two-light with baluster mullions. Inside, there is an entrance lobby with an arcaded screen, a five-bay nave supported by Tuscan columns, and an apsidal east end with an ambulatory. The barrel-vaulted roof features round arches leading to clerestory windows, richly lined with colored marbles.
