Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Agatha, built in 1899 by architect John Kelly, is designed in a basilican plan and modeled on a church in Rome. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. The west front has a pediment topped with a cross, and above the doorcase is a central round-headed niche containing a statue of St. Agatha, flanked by two round-headed windows with inpost blocks that extend into bands. The elaborate central porch has a curved pediment adorned with a papal crown and keys. The tympanum features stone carvings of Christ in Majesty holding a book with the letters Alpha and Omega, accompanied by an angel, an eagle, and two lions. Composite pilasters support two three-panel doors, and above the porch are the words "SANCTA AGATHA ORA PRO NOBIS." The aisles have circular windows on the west front, while the sides feature five round-headed windows in the clerestory with a carved cornice. The south side includes two pedimented chapels with circular windows, four blank arches, and a curved baptistery, leading to an apsidal-ended chancel.
Inside, the church has a five-bay nave supported by composite columns and a barrel-vaulted roof with a coffered gilt ceiling in the chancel. At the rear, there is a gallery with an organ loft. The chancel is fitted with a marble altar and reredos, two semicircular marble pulpits, and a marble altar rail. The side chapels also contain marble altars, reredos, and altar rails, along with a marble font in the baptistery.
