Description
The Church of St Paul is a Grade II listed building located in Kingston-upon-Thames, constructed in the Gothic style over three periods. The nave, side aisles, and possibly the crossing were completed by 1878, designed by F Peck. The south and north transepts were added later, designed by Percy Lamb, and completed in 1924 and 1928 respectively. The nave and chancel are well matched internally, featuring a nave of four bays with lean-to side aisles. Each bay of the nave and side aisles has a pair of short windows in the Early English style. The southwest end of the nave includes two tall windows with a hexafoil above and a central doorway below, which has a pointed arch internally and a two-centred arch faced with ashlar stone. The church has tile roofs and full-height buttresses at the southwest end of the nave.
The chancel has an apse with five tall narrow bays and buttresses that extend outward over the ambulatory. Its roof is also tiled, and the walls are made of chequer brick, with the buttresses featuring both ashlar and brick elements.
Inside, the church has lofty proportions with timber roofs in both the nave and chancel. The walls are faced with bricks, with the chancel using red bricks and the nave using golden bricks, accented with red brick bands and diapering. The chancel arch is lofty, and the lower walls of the transept wings are distinct. The bays of the nave are marked by wide pointed arches.
