Description
Quedgeley War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is situated inside the south gate of St James’ churchyard. It features a hooded Calvary cross atop a tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft rests on a chamfered square plinth, which is set on a four-stepped square base.
The front face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918. 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.' ST JOHN XV.V.13." The rear face of the plinth bears the inscription: "PRECIOUS IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD IS THE DEATH OF HIS SAINTS." PS.116.15.V.
The names of those who fell in the First World War are incised on the front face of the steps. Additionally, the side face of the top step includes a later dedication to those who fell in the Second World War: "ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945." The names of the fallen from the Second World War are listed on the side face of the second step.
