Description

The properties at 26 and 28 Westwood Hill date from the third quarter of the 19th century.

No. 26 is a two-storey, three-window building in a Tudor style, with a high-pitched slate roof that is gabled to the right and left. It is built of pinkish stock brick with stone dressings, including quoins, a first-floor string course, and surrounds to the mullioned and transomed two- and three-light casement windows. The window lights have arches of a 13th-century type with shouldered heads. The window surrounds are irregular and block-like, and a modern door is set within a segment-headed, double-chamfered reveal. A left bay is set back.

No. 28 is also two storeys and three bays, with a gabled front. The left bay is split by a chimney. The pinkish stock brick is now rendered except for the chimney. There is mock timbering on the first floor, a stone first-floor string course, and a high-pitched slate roof. The windows are one-, two-, and three-light casements, some with transoms. The window lights have shouldered lintels, and the windows have headstopped hoodmoulds. The west return, which is similar in appearance to the four-bay elevation facing Jews’ Walk, has a modern bay window on the ground floor to the right, and two smaller inserted windows. To the left, a stone window bay has a cornice with gargoyles and a parapet. A wide, segment-headed double door, in a double-chamfered reveal, has a headstopped hoodmould above. While altered, the property is included in the listing to complete the architectural group.
