Description
This is a pair of houses, Nos 7 and 8, and a basement flat, No 8A, located at Eliot Place, SE3, built in 1792. Originally designed as a pair, each house was intended to be three storeys high with an attic and basement, and had two windows. The roofs are slated mansard roofs, featuring one square dormer with a sash window and glazing bars.
The houses are constructed from brownish-red brick with a parapet. The sash windows have glazing bars and are set within stucco lined reveals, with gauged flat brick arches above, except at ground floor level of No 8, where the arches are within flush, moulded frames. Nos 7 and 8 each have two-storey, single-window extensions to the right, added in the mid to late 19th century, with the outer extensions being particularly narrow. A garage has been built forward of the extensions to No 7.
The front door of No 7 is accessed via six restored steps, leading to a door constructed of six fielded panels, embellished with a patterned rectangular fanlight, and housed within a wood entablature surround. No 8 has similar extensions, rendered externally, with a late 19th-century door housed within a stucco entablature surround. The basement of No 8 was altered to create a garage. No 8A represents a basement flat. A tablet fixed to the centre of the parapet reads "Eliot Place 1792".
The group value of this property is enhanced by its connection to Nos 1 to 8, The Wedge, and the forecourt walls.
