Description
This is a terrace of ten houses built over garages, designed in 1962 and constructed in 1963 by Span Developments Limited, with Eric Lyons as the architect. The buildings were constructed using brick cross-wall construction and concrete floor slabs, with weatherboard cladding and brick detailing to the courtyard. The garages are recessed at ground level to the rear and semi-sunken into the courtyard, with the houses accessed via partly glazed doors and concrete steps with cast-iron railings leading to cantilevered balconies. The windows are thick timber sections with aluminium opening lights, unified by a strong pattern of double transoms. The design incorporates long clerestory glazing with thick transoms on both the house and garage elevations. Nine windows were modified in 1995, but this limited replacement does not detract from the group's exceptional interest. Span Developments Ltd. were a significant private developer in the post-war period, and this terrace represents a prominent and well-modelled example of their work, standing amongst their strongest compositions. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
