Description
Montpelier Row comprises a late 18th century terrace of four houses, built of multicoloured stock brick and featuring parapet fronts. All the houses have gauged brick arches above the recessed sash windows; the glazing bars in windows of numbers 1 and 4 have been replaced, while numbers 2-4 retain them. The window reveals are stucco lined.
Number 1 is three storeys and has a basement, with four windows. It features later louvred shutters. The front door, a six-panel design, is set within a moulded wood architrave and has a patterned fanlight above. A round gauged brick arch with stucco impost blocks frames the doorway, topped with a later swept lead hood. A side door on the left incorporates a carved wood relief of a Biblical nature within its tympanum.
Number 2 is also three storeys with a basement and has two windows. It has a six-panel door with a plain fanlight, similar to the arch above the door at number 1. Number 3, also three storeys and basemented, has three windows and incorporates a stucco cornice and blocking course, as well as an architrave string below. Its four-panel door is set within an entablature surround and has a plain fanlight. Number 4, again three storeys with a basement, has two windows and flat stucco surrounds to the door and ground floor window, with cornices. The six-panel door here has a blocked fanlight, set within a round moulded architrave.
Numbers 1 to 16 (consecutively) and numbers 18 to 20 (consecutively) are designated as a group.
