Description

Perceval House and Spencer House, originally one dwelling built around 1690, are located on Dartmouth Row in Southwark. The building is two storeys with an attic and basement, and presents a nine-window frontage. The roof is steeply pitched and now slated, featuring an 18th-century cyma bracketed eaves cornice. The construction is red brick with stone dressings. A slightly projecting five-bay centrepiece is distinguished by stone rusticated quoins. An early 18th-century two-window North extension was added later. Stone plinth and first-floor bands are present. Gauged flat brick window arches are embellished with stone keys featuring carved masks. The sash windows have been replaced with windows containing glazing bars, all set in flush, moulded frames.

Number 21 has six windows and a small terrace accessed by five stone steps leading to a door comprised of six fielded panels, with two matching fielded panels in the overframe. The stone doorcase has a carved frieze and console bracketed cornice. Inside, a wide hall is characterized by a checker-board marble floor. A wide oak staircase features shallow treads, slightly bulbous turned balusters, a wide ramped handrail, and double square newel posts fitted with arched panels. An entablature with a pulvinated frieze sits on the string of the lower flight, with a guilloche moulding above it. The hall also has a rich plaster cornice and panels with decorative borders. Two ground floor rooms feature ornamental plasterwork.

Number 23 has six replaced steps to a later door within a doorcase displaying a plain pulvinated frieze. The interior has been significantly altered, but some original woodwork remains, along with one bolection moulded corner fireplace. The rear elevation is similar, with projecting side wings.
