Description
36 and 36A Dartmouth Row is a mid-18th century house with two storeys and a sunk basement, featuring five bays. The building has projecting flanking wings, likely added in the early 19th century. These wings have arcaded ground floors, with the left wing having a two-bay return and the right wing having one bay. Number 36 consists of three bays of the house plus the right wing, while number 36A includes the remainder of the structure. The exterior is made of multicoloured stock brick with a parapet front above a wooden modillion cornice, which was added later. The wings do not have a cornice. There are gauged flat brick arches over recessed sash windows with glazing bars, some of which have been replaced, set in stucco-lined reveals. The windows in the wings have stone or cemented lintels. The main door features eight panels (four fielded and four now glazed) within a narrow moulded architrave. A Doric porch with an open pediment and a broken-back cornice, both adorned with modillions, frames the main entrance. A similar door has been inserted in the left angle for number 36A, located under a high, bracketed flat hood. Numbers 28 to 36A form a group.
