Description

The tomb of Reverend Charles Haddon Spurgeon is located in West Norwood Memorial Park and dates from around 1892, with the designer unknown. It is a chest tomb set on a high plinth made of grey granite with stone dressings. The massive granite plinth features quoins made of lighter granite and a central inset inscribed panel. The tomb has a stepped base and polished granite columns with white stone bases and foliated capitals at the corners, supporting an overhanging pitched lid. The sides of the tomb have inscribed panels, with the front panel displaying a finely sculptured marble portrait bust in a tondo. Below the tomb, resting on the steps, is a sculptured pink granite cushion with tasselled corners, featuring an open Bible at Timothy 7:8. Spurgeon was a popular preacher, known for attracting more mourners than any other funeral in the cemetery's history.
