Description

The mausoleum of Sir Henry Tate, located in West Norwood Memorial Park, was built around 1890 by George and Peto. It is constructed from red terracotta interlocking blocks, featuring paler bands and a tiled roof. The structure has a rectangular plan set into raised ground. The entrance is an elliptical arch with a billet surround, adorned with relief angels in the spandrels, and is approached by stone steps leading to elaborate wrought iron door grilles. A moulded band runs around the building at sill level. The long sides of the mausoleum have four-light cusped openings, also with relief angel spandrels and intricate wrought iron grilles. The eaves cornice is enriched with billet and cusped detailing, and the steeply pitched hipped roof showcases a Vitruvian scroll pattern and moulded ridge tiles. Sir Henry Tate was a successful businessman known for developing the sugar cube and refining process, as well as being an art collector and philanthropist who founded the Tate Gallery, which was also designed by S.R.J. Smith.
