Description

This is a mid-19th century terrace of eight houses, numbered 22 to 28, situated on the east side of Grafton Square. Each house is three storeys high, with a basement level, and originally had two windows, though the end houses have a one-window set-back and a two-storey entrance bay featuring classical detailing. The houses are constructed of stucco, with the ground floor and basement treated with banded rustication up to a cornice which is level with the door and window cornices. Pilasters rise from this cornice, supporting a main frieze, cornice, and a panelled parapet, which includes balustraded sections. The windows are sash windows with horizontal bars. The second-floor windows are set within moulded architraves, while those on the ground and first floors are framed by ornamental surrounds depicting sunflower stems with floral details at the corners (some of which are now missing). Console bracketed cornices are positioned above the windows, and the ground-floor windows are topped with pediments that incorporate cast iron decorative guards. Similar cornices appear above the entrance architraves, which lead to entrances set back six steps and accessed via stuccoed balustrades. The entrances have half-glazed doors within moulded architraves.
