Description
The Bowyer Arms Public House is an early to mid-19th century building designed by Thomas Cubitt. It features a symmetrical arrangement of two houses, Nos 66 and 70, which flank the public house. Both Nos 66 and 70 are three storeys tall with two windows each, constructed of stucco. They have an entablature at the second floor level and a top cornice with a blocking course, although No 66 has lost its entablature and its top cornice has been reduced to a band. The windows are sash style with glazing bars set in moulded architraves, and the first floor windows are tripartite. No 66 includes a mid to late 19th century shop front and a six-panel door in a round-arched recess with a moulded architrave. No 70 has a similar door, but its shop front has been altered to feature a four-light window. The Bowyer Arms, No 68, is taller at three storeys with five windows, built of stock brick and adorned with a stucco frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The upper windows are also sash style with delicate glazing bars in moulded architraves. The ground floor is finished in later 19th century stucco, featuring a central door and a carriageway to the right.
