Description
The monument to Joseph Hay, located north of the west end of St Leonard's Church, is a chest tomb enclosed by iron railings. It was created in 1808 to commemorate Joseph Hay, who died in 1805, and was made by Coade & Sealy in London. The tomb is constructed from coadestone and features a moulded plinth. It has raised panels on the east and west sides, each adorned with inverted crossed torches, and the east side includes a commemorative inscription. The south end showcases a relief-carved coat-of-arms against a mantle. The top slab is bordered with a laurel wreath and supports a stepped base and a moulded swept pedestal base for a missing urn. The tomb is set on a rectangular slab that holds arrow-headed railings with swept dog-bars. The dog-rails have inverted arrow-head finials, and the standards are columnar with vase-on-ball bases and urn finials. The railings are damaged, and some parts are missing.
