Description
The monument to George Abell is a chest tomb located south of the west end of St Leonard's Church. It commemorates George Abell, who died in 1826. The tomb is made of Portland limestone and sits on a rendered brick base. The chest has a moulded base with recessed corners, featuring attached bulbous vase pilasters that support a curved-edged top slab, which bears an indecipherable inscription. Each side of the tomb has recessed panels; the main panels display relief carvings of a mantle and skull at the base, along with inscriptions. The west side commemorates George Abell, while the east side honors Richard Colley and Thomas Mogeridge, who financed the tomb. The end panels are simpler, with the south panel containing a commemorative inscription for Elizabeth Abell and the north panel featuring a skull and crossbones.
