Description

Nos 53 to 63 on Bedford Road, built around 1870, are notable houses constructed in stock brick with creamy terra-cotta dressings. Designed by T. Collcutt and built by Jennings, these homes are part of a larger development featuring houses of varying sizes and styles. They are among the most substantial residences following 'Rathcoole' in Ferndale Road.

Each house has four storeys and a basement, with two windows on the front. The terra-cotta detailing is crisp and well-executed, featuring a moulded eaves cornice with deep brackets, pilasters with guilloche moulded panels above the segment-headed windows on the third floor, and rusticated architraves framing the round-arched windows on the second floor. The lower floors include canted bays adorned with leafy patterns on the lintels and floral capitals on the pilasters. The buildings also showcase vermiculate rusticated quoins and quasi-Corinthian prostyle porches with fluted, garlanded columns, accessed by four steps. The doors consist of three long panels and one wide panel, topped with a rectangular fanlight.
