Description
The Dissenters' Chapel is a Nonconformist funerary chapel and catacombs located in Kensal Green Cemetery, built between 1831 and 1834 by John Griffith, who was the Surveyor to the General Cemetery Company. The structure features Portland stone and rendered brick walls, with an Ionic tetrastyle portico that has a pediment. It is flanked by curving three-bay wings that include paired pilasters at the front and twin Ionic columns in antis at the ends, with memorial tablets on the walls of the wings. Inside, the east wall is articulated with pilasters, and there is a pine reading desk and pews. A modern single-storey extension has been added to the rear of the north wing. Below the chapel are catacombs, which are partly sealed. This chapel was the first purpose-built Nonconformist funerary chapel in a public cemetery. The wings were demolished in the early 1970s but were reinstated between 1995 and 1997 by English Heritage.
