Description

The Memorial to Robert Owen is located in Kensal Green Cemetery and was erected in 1879. It features a pink and grey granite obelisk set on a sandstone base, with a bronze portrait relief on the east face. This memorial was funded by public subscription in honor of Robert Owen, a philanthropist who lived from 1771 to 1858 and is buried in Wales. It is a rare example of a non-funerary monument in a private cemetery, commemorating Owen as a pioneering socialist and the founder of the New Lanark experiment in humane employment. This reflects the mid-Victorian Non-Conformist recognition of its heritage. As of a survey in 1998, the memorial was in good condition and had been restored in 1997.
