Description
The Monument to Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks is a two-tier structure made of Peterhead granite. The top tier features a raised floreate cross that runs the length of the surface. On the sides of the upper stage, there is an inscription dedicating the monument to Augustus Wollaston Franks, who was a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, President of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and formerly Keeper at the British Museum. The inscription notes his birth on March 20, 1826, and his death on May 21, 1897, concluding with "RIP." The lower stage of the monument includes a memorial dedication to Franks's sister, Frederica Annie Somerville Franks, who lived from 1840 to 1913.
