Description
The tomb of George Cruikshank, who died in 1878, is a pedestal tomb located in Kensal Green Cemetery. It features a pedestal made of pink Peterhead granite, which once supported a bronze bust that is now missing. The inscription on the tomb describes Cruikshank as an "artist, designer, etcher, painter" and highlights his commitment to total abstinence from intoxicating drinks for 30 years, as well as his role as a pioneer and champion of universal abstinence through his art and writings. The original bronze bust, created by William Behnes, was stolen, but a marble version can be found in the Dickens House Museum. Cruikshank was a prominent cartoonist following Rowlandson, and his remains were later moved to St Paul's Cathedral.
