Description
This is a house with an artist’s studio, built around 1804, originally comprising two separate dwellings. The houses were later combined and altered in 1909 by William and Evelyn De Morgan. The exterior is stuccoed, with a concealed roof and a prominent central stack of stock brick chimneys. The building is three storeys high and has two windows on each floor, except for the second floor where a large four-light studio window is present. A moulded cornice runs along the eaves, interrupted by the studio window. The first floor features French windows within moulded architraves with cornices and brackets, while the ground floor has tall casement windows, all dating to the mid-19th century. A central portico with Tuscan columns supports a cast iron balcony that extends in front of the first-floor windows. A blue plaque is located between the first-floor windows. The rear elevation has casement windows. Stuccoed boundary walls extend to the front and rear, with the front wall incorporating balusters and gate piers topped with pyramidal caps. The interior remains uninspected but may contain noteworthy features. William De Morgan, a significant figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and a renowned ceramic artist, resided and died at this address in 1917. The original houses, dating back to circa 1804, were once part of Bolton Place and potentially formed part of Church Lane West prior to 1867.
