Description

Numbers 2 to 32 and Number 34, known as The Gloucester Public House, form a terrace primarily consisting of shops, except for Nos 2-8, which are dwelling houses. This terrace dates from the early 19th century and is three storeys high, constructed of stucco. Each unit is two sash windows wide, with the end four houses set slightly forward. The ground floor features a three-light sash window and a round-headed door. The first floor has architraves and pediments on consoles, along with cast iron balconies. The second floor includes sash windows with architrave surrounds, topped by a modillion cornice and blocking course. The other houses lack pediments and balconies. Notably, the central houses, 18 and 20, have cornices above the first-floor windows and full-height Ionic pilasters between the windows, although the capitals are missing from No 18. The terrace also showcases good late 19th-century shop fronts. The Gloucester Public House features a well-designed later 19th-century front with paired Corinthian pilasters that support a cornice with consoles and dentils.
