Description
Nos 56 and 58 Queen's Gate Terrace are a pair of houses built around 1863-1864, designed by architect C Grey. These late 19th-century homes feature polychrome brick with stone dressings and stucco ornamentation, showcasing Italianate Ruskinian characteristics. Each house is two to three windows wide and has an immensely overhanging eaves cornice with enriched brackets and coloured tile inlay, topped with ornamental chimney stacks. The buildings rise four storeys with a basement, and feature arched entrances set in advanced porches. The first-floor windows have rope-moulded arches and carved capitals, while the upper floors display grouped windows in threes, each with arched polychromed heads separated by pilasters, curved caps, and archivolts. A string course on the third floor is highlighted by a twisted rope motif. Additionally, there is a first-floor balcony with Gothic iron balustrades.
