Description

Numbers 14-35 form a terrace of houses built around 1828-30 in Islington. The terrace is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond, with stucco detailing, and roofs of Welsh and artificial slate. The houses are three and four storeys high, with two windows each, except for numbers 15 and 34, which have one window. The terrace is symmetrical, with a central feature at numbers 23-26 that projects forward, and end sections at numbers 14-16 and 33-35, which also project. The end sections feature three pairs of giant pilasters with an entablature and a pediment to the central house.

The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, with the ground floor decorated with banded rustication. Steps lead up to round-arched entrances with three-quarter Greek Doric columns to numbers 15-22 and 33, panelled pilaster jambs to numbers 23-32 and pilasters set in recessed panels of smooth stucco to number 34. Cornices, fanlights with decorative glazing, and panelled doors are present at numbers 15-22, 26, 28, and 34. Number 35 has a flat-arched entrance with pilaster-jambs framed by pilasters and an entablature. Ground-floor windows feature round arches with radiating glazing bars and some margin lights. First-floor windows are flat-arched to numbers 14-22 and 27-35, with stucco architraves and cornices (except for numbers 15 and 34), and iron balconies. Numbers 23-26 have round-arched windows with gauged brick heads and iron balconies. Second-floor windows are flat-arched with stucco architraves, except for those at numbers 15 and 34. Pilasters, a cornice and a pediment are on numbers 14 and 16 and 33-35. A mansard roof with dormers is featured at numbers 23-26, while the remaining houses have a parapet. Stacks are located on the party walls. The windows are commonly 6/6 sashes. Cast-iron area railings are present with ball-and-disc and spear-and-tassel finials, and occasional overthrows.
